The Story

In The Widow and the Mirror, you'll have to investigate a possible insurance fraud. By interrogating witnesses, police or experts using different tactics, you will be able to find out how to fit the pieces of a strange puzzle that threatens the very existence of the insurance company you have been working for all your life.

The Cast

A wide cast of charismatic characters play a role in this story.

Features

  • ~14k words, good for an hour/an hour and a half playthrough.
  • Use tarot cards to direct interactions.
  • Difficulty level configurable to set the time limit to solve the case.
  • Hint system integrated in the story.

The Concept

You may have noticed that there is not much originality in the plot. Nor in the game mechanics. That's not what I intended. It's a style exercise. A tribute, out of admiration and respect, to a way of telling stories and to the people who made it possible, mainly on the big screen, but also in other media such as literature.

If the looks or names of the characters ring a bell, it's not just a coincidence. It is highly intentional. There is no attempt to exploit their image. As I said, this humble game is born out of respect and admiration. For this reason, I have chosen not to state who these characters are, throwing their names around.

Probably, the ones who identify them, will get a lot more enjoyment out of it this way. Let it be a secret between you and me.

Awards

The Widow and the Mirror won several awards in the Junares 2023 jam.

Another gem! This is the fourth game of yours that I've enjoyed. (I think I've played all your SFW games now) Love the style, music and old movie inspiration. I have to know the characters though, if you don't mind. My guesses are below, in horizonal order of your The Cast picture.

Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, Vivien Leigh/Susan Hayward???, ? (at first thought, Gary Cooper, but second thought, not), Lauren Becall, ?, James Cagney, ?, Vincent Price, Orson Welles

You almost got all of them right. V. Leigh, right. Then your gaps (and 1 mistake) are M. Caine, R. Hayworth, NOT J. Cagney but E.G. Robinson and D. Lynch (the filmaker, not an actor).

I only have 2 NSFW games (Dirty Business and The Candidate), and a little bit, optional and only text, in Caught in Orbit.

Oh, yes! I was thinking that was Rita Hayworth, but wasn't sure-- I've seen only one film of hers, I think. And Michael Caine! Yes, he looked so familiar, but again, I've seen only one or two of his younger days films, so he was harder for me. Lol, thanks for the right answers. It was really fun guessing.
Yep, I played and enjoyed the SFW version of Caught in Orbit. I also love Star Trek, so it was right up my alley.

This game reminds me a lot of A Case of Distrust! I love the heavy noir vibe and the art is gorgeous.

Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it. I didn't know that game (didn't even knew it was a game) and it looks supercool.

Un magnífico ejercicio de estilo. Intrigante, bien elaborado, de estética fascinante, música envolvente y experiencia inmersiva.

Matalla Interactive se ha superado... de nuevo.

The style is fantastic. I particularly like the cinematic shots of the characters. The tarot card mechanich is fresh and original. Visually, it's stunning. Great work!
